Welcome! to the University of Strathclyde Sports Unions 96th year, which looks like it’s shaping up to be a great one! With the huge success that was the Commonwealth Games held in the City of Glasgow only two years ago, the fantastic atmosphere and the buzz for sport is still present in the city! I hope that you are all encouraged to get involved with sports here at Strathclyde; whether you are a returning member or taking part for the first time, I am happy to welcome you to another year of Strathclyde Sport.
Here at Strathclyde we cater for all abilities, whether you are an elite athlete or a complete beginner, we have opportunities here for you! We have sports clubs which you may never have heard of, offering you a unique chance to try something completely new, as well as those more mainstream sports. For students with more competitive aspirations we have teams and individuals competing in local, national and international competitions.
I’m Calvin, your 2016-17 Sports President. My role is to oversee the running of all our cubs and the Sports Union as a whole. The Sports Executive, which consists of 12 student volunteers and is chaired by myself, are here to help all the clubs and make sure the Sports Union is being run by students for students.
The huge intervarsity event which is the Glasgow Taxis Cup will be making is annual return on the 15th March 2017. This event will see us at Strathclyde wrestle in a full day of competition to get the silverware back off Glasgow University and return it to its rightful home! Our biggest social event of the year, the PwC Sports Awards Ball, will also be returning in February, which is a night not to be missed!
Sport at University is the perfect way to stay healthy, to make friends, have fun and to gain those employability skills that companies love so much. Getting involved with the Tennis team in my first year was the best decision I made at University! Speak to any club captain, committee or exec member and they will tell you the same thing; that the opportunities and experiences associated with university sport can be some of the most memorable you have during your time here. Whether it's the banter on the bus up to Edinburgh for an away match or a satisfying post-match drink after having defeated Glasgow in a fixture or even just making new friendships that will last a lifetime, there is no doubt that the Sports Union is where it's at.
Come up to level 7 in the Union and you can see me and the 3 members of staff to find out more information about the Sports Union, everyone is always welcome up here! So please get involved! I can promise you it will be the best decision you make! Let’s make this year one to remember!
